Hey! It's our 40th episode!

Inside this episode! We review Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Amanda Conner's digital release Ame-Comi Wonder Woman #1 with wonderful colors by Paul Mounts; Jeff Lemire and Mikel Janin's Justice League Dark #9. We then talk to writer Kelly Sue DeConnick about her upcoming project Captain Marvel as well as her reboot of Ghost for Dark Horse with Phil Noto, and an upcoming creator owned project with Emma Rios! We also geek out about The Avengers movie, speculate on The Dark Knight Rises, and talk about process and sleep schedules! For Chick of the Week this week I choose the uber-talented (and delightful) Stephanie Hans, who I've now had the pleasure of working with twice and can't even express how wonderful it has been. I get all tongue-tied even. We also chat about the Alan Scott reveal and Hunger Games and how closet racism and homophobia still depresses the crap out of us.

Inside this episode! This week we review Secret Six #34, American Vampire: Survival Of The Fittest #1, and The Never Weres.  Hot topic this week…could it be anything other than the DCnU?  The September "re-launch" is all anyone in comics is talking about - which we're sure DC considers some measure of success.  Chick of the week is a tribute to one of the best female characters in all of comics, who will sadly be retconned back into oblivion come September.  Barbara Gordon as Oracle, oh how we loved thee.  There's also a long discussion after the credits in which I try to convince Maddy and Sue to give Buffy The Vampire Slayer a try and the whole thing evolves (or devolves?) into a discussion about our influences and inspirations in fiction.  I didn't want to cut it because it's interesting stuff (and I just don't get to rant about the awesomeness that is Buffy enough), but I put it after the cut as it's a bit off path from the rest of the cast. Enjoy!

Good times!  Sue picks this week’s CHICK OF THE WEEK, and it's one of the most talented artists in comics - a powerhouse of drawing ability - and as many of us discovered this past summer - a solid writer as well!  Plus everyone’s pick of the week.

It’s Episode 010!

Inside this episode! We review the second issue of Magus from 12 Gauge Comics – could it live up to the first great issue?  We also review a done-in-one issue of Batgirl in which Bryan Q. Miller keeps us chuckling and Dustin Nguyen blows us away with his art – including some exceptional watercolor pages.  Why can’t more comics have awesome watercolor pages?  Let’s start a watercolor revolution I say!  For our Hot Topic of the week we discuss the abysmal appearance of Wonder Woman in Superman #708 in which Wonder Woman’s origin story becomes “I saw Superman be a hero once.”  That’s right the origins of the trinity are now “falling pearls”, “crashed spaceship” and “I saw Superman once”.  OY.  The problems with this are legion but are especially damning thanks to our good friends context and representation (or lack thereof).  I’m up for CHICK OF THE WEEK and I pick a completely badass up and coming young female artist that is impressing us right and left (including this week!).  Also, everyone’s pick of the week!

It’s Episode 007! 

Inside this episode! Can Heroes For Hire #2 live up to the superb Heroes For Hire #1?!  Does Wonder Girl’s One-Shot have any significance whatsoever...and did we like it or hate it?  We discuss diversity in comics and talk about Vaneta Rogers Newsarama Hot Buttons Part 4: Superhero Diversity piece as well as some thoughts by the always exceptional David Brothers of 4^th Letter and Comics Alliance.  Sue points out the irony and frustration that we’re still discussing these issues the day before Martin Luther King Day and nearly 50 years after the civil rights movement.  Plus Sue and Maddy try to keep me from killing myself mid-cast thanks to depression over the state of diversity in comics.  We introduce a new ongoing feature - thanks to the suggestion of listener Tim Miner of 5 Minute Marvels – CHICK OF THE WEEK…but Greg Burgas is going to want to cover his ears for who we pick for our first ever "chick of the week".  Here’s a hint, she’s currently got an online petition going to bring her back (Ragnell also suggests you write to DC - which I agree with).  You can read more gushing about her here, here, and here, and buy this, this, and this if you want to explore her further. Inside this episode! How good is the new Heroes For Hire series?  Pretty damn good.  How great is the Warriors homage?  Is it the best ending of any book this week?  Perhaps, but more importantly...Black Widow's costume is zipped up in every. single. panel. Kelly can die happy now.  She-Hulks #2 is Jen and Lyra versus APES!  Smart super-powered apes!  Need we say more? We probably don't have to, but we did anyway.  CW is entertaining the idea of a live-action Raven series to replace Smallville as it comes to a close...is it really possible Teen Titan Raven will get a television series before Wonder Woman?  We talk about why it's maybe not such a crazy idea after all.  Esther Inglis-Arkell wrote a piece on io9 about which comic characters deserve R-rated movies...this naturally spurs a discussion of what characters we'd like to see in R-rated films.  We've also got everyone's pick of the week, plus, after the credits...Sue's deconstruction of comics and soap operas...which soap is the Liefeld era?!

In our second episode...! Was J.H. Williams III's Batwoman #0 worth the wait...or should we just keep waiting for Batwoman #1 instead?  And what's up with Batman and his silly disguises?  Is this really the way the world's greatest detective detects?  Seems unlikely!  What happened to Marc Andreyko's Manhunter Face Off trade we were supposed to get last week?  Low pre-orders apparently means it's not going to come out in trade, but it's still something worth reading.  Young Justice premiered on Cartoon Network this weekend didn't have a single line of female dialogue for about 99.9% of the hour long premiere.  Some dudes seem to get mad when we talk about this...but facts are facts and is it really not a bit odd? Plus, everyone’s pick of the week!*
